Dorothy Dunnett wasn't too hard to find and having read her I am addicted. Her books are engaging with an understanding of human nature that is often sadly lacking in popular books. She takes an interesting time and pours it into your head with no sugar added. She is knowledgeable and doesn't dumb things down for her readers because she knows we're smart enough.
I know a lot of people don't like historical fiction, but this is its own brand of historical fiction with far fewer liberties taken, a lot of effort made, and above all stellar storytelling.
